An ambitious 24 year performance experiment.
Presented in 2014 by FringeArts The Sincerity Project takes the idea of a heart-to-heart conversation and explodes it into a theatrical derby of hilarious, ecstatic, and unconventional vulnerability. Six performers engage in a ritual of sincere storytelling and exuberance as they wrestle with the pleasures and pains of their pasts and the complexities of being a young person becoming a not-so-young person.
Responses to The Sincerity Project #1For this first brilliant installment, the ensemble looked at their future prospects, the love they might find, the kids they might have, the bodies that will inevitably betray them, and the mortality that is staring them in the face, challenging them to last long enough to finish this project. And as they made a promise to themselves to see it through to its finale in 2038, so they invited their audience along for the lengthy, ambitious journey. It’s been a while since I laughed that loud, and wept that openly, and I can’t wait for 2016.” Even after moments of sheer freedom and seriously introspective chats, the cast proceeds to strip away the traditional veil of drama associated with performance art-usually created amongst fussy costumes, frilly props, and distracting sets-figuratively and literally. While some audience members may connect most with the “mysterious and cool” Hirano, or Mr. Camp, the opening narrator who explains that he and his wife are about to have their first child, (a daughter who will touchingly always be the same age as this project), it is certain that everyone will connect with one (or all) of the participants. This memorable collection of heart-to-hearts, sublime movements, and ever-evolving competitions is one you need to see to believe. For real.” At its heart, The Sincerity Project celebrates hope and the desire to live both life and art as more than a series of disconnected moments.” |
