OBAMA VISITS CUBA

Cuba Today, Obama in Cuba

Obama in Cuba with a mural of Che Guevara, March 2016

Not everyone was happy when President Obama visited Cuba in 2016. This two-day trip was the first time that a standing President of the US visited Cuba in 88 years. If the lifting of economic sanctions and Presidential meeting with Raul Castro and Obama wasn’t enough wasn’t enough to infuriate some Americans, this picture of Obama in front of a Che Guevara mural sure did the trick. (He was visiting a memorial dedicated to national hero Jose Martí.)

Of course, this visit was historical for many reasons. It did not include a meeting with Fidel Castro. In the area of Havana where the Obamas would be visiting many preparations were made. Streets were cleaned, new roads built, buildings painted and repaired and some people were shuffled away. Of course, other international events such as a Prado fashion show and the filming of Fast and Furious 8 have also led to select portions of Havana getting a facelift.
