La Víbora is the most populated neighborhood in Havana.
Its name, the Serpent, stems from a pharmacy that was a landmark for people traveling between Bejucal (rural municipality) and Havana in the 1700’s. Travelers often stopped at the pharmacy, with its medical sign of two intertwined serpents. In reference to this pharmacy, travelers began to refer to this place as “the serpent stop” (“la parada de la vibora”).
